An outdated NFS descriptor indicates that the client may have opened the file, but the server no longer recognizes the list descriptor. In some cases, NFS discards its data structures after a time-out. In other cases, you must completely flush the NFS data structures themselves and the NFS system.

What causes stale NFS file handles?
A file descriptor can become outdated if the list of files or directories pointed to by the descriptor is deleted for another host while your client still maintains an active object reference. This can happen if the service is changed on the NFS server, but the directory change time is not reported.
