PC running slow?
If you are facing an unrecoverable hard drive error on your PC, we hope this user guide will help you. URE is an unrecoverable read error. Something happened that caused the sector scan to fail, which normally cannot fix the drive. The drive electronics are usually complex, it will only skip a hard drive if it can read it correctly on the platter.
Spoilers: this is a total myth!
URE: Fatal Read Error is an item appearing in the Hard and Fashions datasheet, the origin of the myth. Many argue that reading 12TB of data from a consumer hard drive will almost certainly result in a (fatal) read error. data will be lost. Single or entire RAID array. All nonsense, as described below.
What Is ERUs?
URE stands for Fatal Error Read. SoIt is not known to be subject to the following name variations:
- UBER – Uncorrectable Bit Error Rate
- UBE – Uncorrectable Bit Error Rate
- EBU – Uncorrectable Bit Error Rate
- LSE – Hidden Sector Error
Hidden because you don’t really know about it until you try to look at it. - Bad Sector Error

This is a simple hard drive specification that gives the error rate when reading data from that same hard drive (from now on the hard drive as a hard drive) or a statistical report, roughly the number of errors read in relation to the amount of data read. A typical best result (in the decade leading up to the 2020 return) is 10-14 for consumers (read: cheap) and also 10-15 or more (ie. ..cheaper) companies are expensive) (read: readers.
Example of all WD Ultrastar DC HC510 specifications (Enterprise class):
Error rate (fatal, read sections) | 1 out of 1015 |
Is hard drive failure fixable?
The good news is that while legitimate errors can be fixed, with the help of powerful scanning tools, data recovery specialists can still recover data from problem areas of your hard drive. Damaged starter parts can be a sign of a serious underlying drive problem, such as a bad battery.

How do you format a hard drive unrecoverable?
There is an application which is basically Eraser. You can open the hard drive case, take it apart completely, remove the drive(s) and damage each one.Scratching plates does not make them unrecoverable. Also, throwing that particular hard drive into a fire can certainly help.

General interpretation of the URE specification type:
When the amount of linked data you’re reading from your hard drive approaches 12 TB, read failure is inevitable (fatal).
With logical consequence:
If this happens when rebuilding from all degraded RAID 5 arrays, the entire spectrum will be lost.
What causes a corrupted hard drive?
Hard drive data corruption can occur due to problems with chassis components, software bugs, or even cable problems. Physical problems with hard drives that contribute to damage are often caused by poor operating conditions, but all hard drives eventually fail due to mechanical physical stress and wear and tear.
(12TB is a 1 in 1014 for consumer drives. For enterprise hard drives with lower error rates, this figure is significantly higher, so 120TB for UBER=1 in 1015 and 1200TB for UBER=1 in 1016).
Examples of the above statement why see:
Practice
“Never believe this just because you’ve heard it. Don’t believe anything just because it’s certain. , say and spread by many. Don’t believe anything just because it’s listed in your religious catalogue. Do not believe only in the authority of your teachers over the elders. Don’t believe in tradition, as the craft has been passed down from generation to generation. But after observation and analysis, if the buyers find something reasonable or conducive to the welfare and benefit of all, then accept the software and abide by it.” – Gautama One Buddha
Good bite. This is such a long read time that you can do a whole new read on your hard drive and see for yourself if a URE occurs. Nearly. It would take about a month to read 12TB with one hard drive. Less if several of them are scanned in parallel.
Test
So it takes a disk or several and one label to prove the whole URE 12TB theory, but in some cases there is little to no such evidence when it can be found. The reverse is also true. For example, Microsoft conducted and documented such a robust test in 2005 ([4] “Empirical measurements related to failure and error rates ofskov”, Microsoft Research Technical Report MSR-TR-2005-166, December 2005) with the result: Moved 2PB through low cost hardware and saw 5 memory read errors, multiple controller crashes, multiple system reboots due to security patches.< br>Oh, they got 5 reading errors!
How do I fix a hard drive fatal error?
Press the important combination at the same time Press Win + X, then select “Device Manager” -> “Hard Drive Drivers”. Now select the desired type of external drive and right click on it. Select “Update Driver Software” from the list. Wait for the process to complete and also check if the message “The request failed due to a fatal device hardware error” has disappeared.
But they come back: the EBU=10-14 specs state that we should have seen 112 research errors. So there were 20 times fewer failures than expected. Also, 2 errors were actually fixable (the application that read the history and computed the checksum got the data again. The operating system retried the read, which was and succeeded.) So, 3 major errors, fatal if 112 was expected. This is 37 times less . Even the lowest test system (desktop class, runs on a proper desktop, not like others in an air-conditioned bin) only had type errors: as part of the desktop (system 1), we lost 10 GB of files in 35,000 attempts, not 100 GB of files in 7560 attempts. 350 TB failure of a specific first group (10 GB test files) and a complete failure of 756 TB in theOther group (test files 100 GB). Let’s take a look at the comparison to the myth: 12TB review -> (almost) a definite bug. Doesn’t look like it.
In addition, one study found [5]:
None of the clusters showed a correlation between the number of reads and the number of writes each reader sees (as reported by the respective readers). SMART parameters) and the number of LSEs developed. Hidden (Understanding and defending against industry dilemmas. ACM Trans. Storage, September 2010)
And more [6]:
observation 9 decades. Latent sector errors are not generated independently of each other. A drive with latent sector errors is more likely to experience larger latent sector errors than a drive without latent sector errors. (Analysis of hidden sector errors in disk drives. InProc. SIGMET-RICS’07, 2007)
Let’s analyze this as a whole in the next section:
