Over the past few weeks, several users have reported to us that they had an error reading the Rails rvm console.

 

 

I’ve configured rvm to make sure my local Ruby version is often the same as the version of my server for the application I’m working on (Ruby 1.8.7). I did this and that, dark red 1.8.7 installed fine. However, when I pulled to start the Rails console, I got the following error:

  Failed to order read string. If you need to close or install the Readline account, reinstall Ruby.You are probably following the "rvm notes" regarding dependencies and / or reading the docs page type http://rvm.beginrescueend.com/packages/readline/. Make sure every 'rvm remove X; rvm install X 'to recompile your Ruby using the readline client support available after the readline libraries.Failed to load Wirble: no file to download - whirlwind 

I read the notice on the error page (http://rvm.beginrescueend.com/packages/readline/) and followed the specific instructions that led to installing Readline and uninstalling Ruby 1.8.7 and then installing Ruby 1.8. .7 a second time with readline support. (Actually this website is currently using Ruby 1.9.2 as an example, but I assume it should work as well 1.8.7 onwards. Perhaps not).

But I still get the same error. Has anyone else been there and found out?

I attached rvm to make it obvious that my dark red version is forlocal development is the same as my server version because of the specific application I’m working with (Ruby 1.8.7). I did and hooked this up, Ruby 1.8.7 is fine. However, when trying to start the Rails console, an error is displayed:

I read the comments on the fan page that the bug relates to (http://rvm.beginrescueend.com/packages/readline/) and followed the instructions that only install Readline and uninstall Ruby 1.8. 7, then reinstall Dark 1.8.7 with readline support. (Actually, because the page is using Ruby 1.9.2 as the situation at i, but suppose it should work with 1.8.7 as well. Maybe it’s absofiercely wrong).

But I still get the real error. Has anyone else noticed and recognized?
