In most cases, a service should run in the context of the Service Control Manager, not Visual Studio. For this reason, debugging a service is not as easy as debugging other types of studio makeup apps. To debug a service, you really need to start the service and then attach a debugger to the process,in which it is likely to be launched. You can debug your application using all of the standard Visual Studio debugging features.

Add a debugger only when starting a new service. The attachment process interrupts your department’s hottest functions; it does not interfere with or interrupt the processing of the service. To Debug The Service

1. Create a new service in the debug configuration.

2. Create your organization. For more information, see How To: Install and Remove Services .

3. Start a service including Service Manager, Server Explorer, or based on code. For more information, see What if I need to: start services .

4. Start Visual Studio with administrative certificates so you can attach solution processes. A

5. (optional) Visual Studio menu bar, try tools, options. In the Options dialog box, select Debug, Symbols, select the Microsoft Symbol Servers check box, and click OK.

6. On the menu bar, choose Attach To Process from the Debug or Tools menu. (Keyboard: Press Ctrl + Alt + P)

   A dialog box will open.

7. Select the Show Processes for All Patients check box.

8. In the “Frequently availablee Processes “select a process for your department and then click Attach.

   Tip

   The process comes from the same provider as your own service executable.

9. Select a specific appropriate option and click OK to close the dialog box.

10. Set the breakpoints you want to use in your code.

Windows Services Troubleshooting Tips

You should not add anything to a process unless you are familiar with the process and understand most of the implications of adding and possibly removing that process. For example, if you attach to a WinLogon process and then exit debug, the system will shutdown because it will not work without WinLogon.

To get meaningful debugging information, the Visual Studio debugger must find symbol files for the exact binaries being debugged. If you are undoubtedly debugging a service built with Visual The Studio, the symbol files (.pdb files) are undoubtedly in the same folder as the executable or main library, and the debugger automatically folds them.
