Here are some simple methods to help you solve your VoIP codec table issue.
NUMBER | SOFTWARE STANDARD | DESCRIPTION | BITRATE (KB / s) |
---|---|---|---|
G.711 * | ITU-T | Pulse modulation and coding (PCM) | 64 |
G.711.1 | ITU-T | Pulse modulation and coding (PCM ) | 80-96 Kbps |
G.721 | ITU-T | Adaptive differential pulse code < / td> | 32 |
G.722 | ITU-T | 7 kHz audio encoding into sixty-four kbps | 64 |
When we make voice calls around the world using voice over IP (VoIP) or other digital networks, the voice must encode them into digital data and vice versa. In the same process, the content is compressed, so the transmission is considered faster and the call quality is better. This encoding is done by codecs (which are actually short and encoders / decoders) to
Common VoIP Codecs
There are many codecs for audio, video, broadcast, and text. Below is a list of the most common VoIP codecs.
Codec | bandwidth / kbps | Comments |
G.711 | 64 | Provides accurate voice transmission. Very low processor requirements. For bidirectional transmission, a minimum of 128 kbps is required. It is at least one of the oldest codecs (1972) and is best used at high bandwidth, making this tool a little outdated for the Internet, but unfortunately still suitable for LANs. Is there some kind of MOS 4.2 that is very high, but optimal conditions must be met. |
G.722 | 48/56/64 | Adapts to different and compressed bandwidths, guaranteed in case of network congestion. It records frequency ranges twice as wide as G.711 and then at better, near, or better quality than PSTN. |
G.723.1 | 5.3 / 6.3 | High pressure with high quality sound. It can be used in addition to dial-up access and in low bandwidth environments because of its very low bit efficiency. However, this requires more processing power. |
G.726 | 16/24/32/40 | Better version of G.721 and G.723 (other than G.723.1). |
G.729 | 8 | Excellent bandwidth utilization. Fault tolerance. This is an improvement over others with similar markings, but it is allowed; |
GSM | 13 | High compression ratio. Available for free on many hardware and software platforms. The same coding can be found in conventional GSM cell phones (nowadays, improved versions are often used). It offers MOS a with a value of 3.7, which is not bad. |
iLBC | 15 | stands for Internet for low bit rate codec. It has now been purchased by Google and is distributed free of charge. Packet loss resilience, mainly used by many VoIP applications, especially with available source . |
Speex | 2.15 / 44 | Minimizes bandwidth usage by using variable bit rates. It is one of the most commonly used codecs in a large number of VoIP applications. |
SILK | 6 to 40 | SILK was developed with Skype and is now over-licensed as it is available as free and open source software that is now implemented in many other applications and services. This is the newest local codec called Opus. WhatsApp is a new sample application that Opus uses for encrypted voice calls. |

Codec | bandwidth / kbps | Comments |
G.711 | 64 | Provides accurate voice transmission. Very low processor requirements. Fastest 128 kbps for bidirectional transmission if needed. It is one of the oldest codecs (1972), and it works best with high bandwidth, making the product somewhat obsolete for the Internet, but still works well for LANs. There is some kind of MOS 4.2, it is quite large, but optimal conditions must be met. |
G.722 | 48/56/64 | Adapts to changing and compressed bandwidth and protects against network congestion. It captures frequency bands twice as wide as G.711, resulting in sharper quality and may or even better than PSTN. |
G.723.1 | 5.3 / 6.3 | Large amount of data with high quality sound. Can be used in switched and low bandwidth environments as it operates at very low bit rates. However, this requires more processing power. |
G.726 | 16/24/32/40 | Improved version of G.721 and G.723 (retained in contrast to G.723.1). |
G.729 | 8 | Excellent use There is no bandwidth. Fault tolerance. It’s a nice improvement over others with similar labeling, but it’s licensed, which means it’s not entirely free. End users pay indirectly for these licenses when they purchase the hardware (telephony devices, also called gateways) they implement. |
GSM | 13 | High compression ratio. Available for free on many hardware platforms and platforms. The same coding can be found in previously used GSM cell phones (improved versions are often used today). It offers MOS a with a value of 3.7, which is not bad. |
iLBC | 15 | stands for Internet for low bit rate codec. This has now led to its takeover by Google and free access. Resistant to packet loss, currently used by many VoIP applications, especially from unsecured sources. |
Speex | 2.15 / 44 | Minimizes bandwidth usage by using variable bit rates. It is one of the most commonly usedDecks in VoIP applications. |
SILK | 6 to 40 | SILK was developed by Skype and is now available under license as it is available as free and open source software that is used in many other applications and services. This is the basis for what the latest codec is called Opus. WhatsApp is every example of an application that Opus uses to make voice calls with a codec. |

Which audio codec is best for VoIP?
The G.711 codec should be used for any type of VoIP application as there is usually a license fee. There is also digital compression, so it is used as the best VoIP codec for interfacing with the public switched telephone network (PSTN).
Which codec is better G711 and G729?
Different codecs offer different compression levels. The G711 provides uncompressed high-pitched voice but uses a lot of information. The G729 is compressed, so it uses less bandwidth at the expense of sound quality, although that’s more than enough for most calls.
