When starting Windows PE (WinPE) or Windows Setup, select Legacy UEFI or BIOS mode. If you want to switch to firmware mode after installing Windows, you can try using the MBR2GPT tool.

Typically, Windows will install with the new UEFI mode as it contains more security features than the only legacy BIOS mode. If you are booting from a network that only has BIOS patches, you will need to boot into Legacy BIOS mode.

After installing Windows, the device will automatically start in the same modewhere it was already installed.

To Start With BIOS Or Uefi:

1. Open the firmware menu. You can use any of these methods:

   • Start the computer, press and also the design key to open the map. Commonly used: Esc, Delete, F1, F2, F10, F11, or F12. On tablets, it is preferable to use the volume up or down keys ( other general keys and buttons ). During the startup process, the key is often displayed on the screen. If you can’t see it, or the screen is flying too fast to see it, visit the manufacturer’s website.

   • Or, if Windows is already installed, select Power ()> from the logon screen and the Start menu while holding down the Shift key while selecting Restart. Select Troubleshoot> Advanced UEFI Options> Firmware Options.

2. Start the reader or technology in UEFI or BIOS mode from all firmware menus:

   In the boot device menu, select a command that confirms that the firmware mode and this device are confirmed. For example, select UEFI: USB Drive BIOS:or Network / LAN.

   You can separate ad requirements for the same device. For example, your company might see a uefi USB stick and a BIOS USB stick. Each team uses the same device and media, but the computer boots in a different firmware mode.

   Some devices support the mode (eg uefi BIOS). Other devices only allow booting in BIOS mode by manually disabling key UEFI security features. To disable security features, go to Security> Secure Boot and disable the feature.

   Note

   Some older PCs (Windows 7 or earlier) support UEFI, but then you need to navigate to the exclusion file. In the firmware menu, find the option: “Boot from file”, then for EFI BOOT BOOTX64.EFI under Windows PE, possibly Windows Media Setup.

Determine If Winpe Is Running In BIOS Or Possibly In UEFI Mode

Query the registry to find out what mode the device is in. This is often done from the command line:

  reg query / v hklm  system  currentcontrolset  control PEFirmwareType

Make Sure You Run The Most Appropriate Mode Each Time

Here are some ways to make sure you enter the correct firmware mode every time you start up your computer.

Use Pre-formatted Hard Modes And Use A Method That Does Not Automatically Format The Disc.

If you want to make sure your disk boots in positive mode, use the disks that you previously formatted with GPT file format for UEFI technology or mbr file format for BIOS mode. If the installation is notIt will start and the entire computer will start in the mode, Windows thin installation will fail. To fix this problem, restart your computer in the correct firmware mode.

Remove Roaming UEFI Or BIOS Files

If you only want the computer to boot in a specific mode, you can delete the files that Windows PE can use Windows Installer to boot in UEFI mode and even BIOS mode. Uninstall the following software depending on the mode you want to exercise.

Boot in UEFI mode only

Remove most of the bootmgr file from the root of any Windows PE or Windows installation media. This prevents the device from booting into BIOS mode.

Boot in BIOS mode only

Remove the EFI folder from the Windows PE root directory or from the Windows installation media. This will prevent the device from booting into UEFI mode.

Some PCs (also older versions of Windows 7) support UEFI but require viewing the boot file. In these firmware menus, find the Boot Caused by File option, then navigate to the EFI BOOT BOOTX64.EFI folder.
