There are different versions of the K-Lite Pack codec. Starting with a very small package that contains only the most important decoders, straight to a larger and more extensive package. These packages will definitely be compatible with Windows Vista / 7/8 / 8.1 / 10. Older versions also ship with XP.
Packages also contain 32-bit and 64-bit codecs, so they work fine with the x86 and x64 variants usually associated with Windows!

- Few ACM / VFW codecs like x264VFW Lagarith. This type of codec is used, like some video editing / encoding applications, to work with AVI files. For example VirtualDub.
These codecs are not used or required for video playback.
Important Note: The K-Lite Codec Pack does not expand the import capabilities of most professional video editing software such as Vegas MovieStudio or Adobe Premiere. These applications often only support importing a small set of files, including file formats, and do not support using the codecs included in the codec pack (DirectShow / VFW). Modern authors often only use their own codecs, or only support external codecs of the same type from the Media Foundation.
And some additional DirectShow filters are recommended:
- ffdshow audio / video processor
Provides filtering systems for converting decoded audio to video.
- ffdshow audio / video decoder, alternative choice of Lav audio / video decoder.
- AC3Filter, alternative to choosing LAV audio decoder.
Important note: the additional filters mentioned above are not installed by default. We also recommend that you do not use these legacy filters. These are just updates aimed at a small group of people who have a reason to use them. We strongly recommend using the regular decoders included in the kit. They are better.
