When you create recorded video data, you can compress it to reduce the file size using a compression program (or place it on a developer’s computer). If you like to play video file, your computer is necessary. You can install a decompressor that can play a specific compression format. This program is called a codec.
When you are trying to convincingly reproduce a file that uses a codec that is not set toon your computer, one of our Windows Media Players will try to download this particular codec from the Microsoft server. If a specific codec is available, Windows Media Player will install it on your computer and then simply play the file. However, if your codec is not available on the system (for example, because the codec was not launched by Microsoft), Windows Media Player projection will display a message stating that your computer is your own missing codec.
In some cases, the file you are trying to play uses an absolute codec that is not available or compatible with Windows Media Player. At this point, you won’t be able to imagine that Windows Media Player is playing this particular .avi file.

Note. If the link to a specific codecis not available, search the Internet for this codec to find where it is available. If you can never find out which codec to know because you cannot find it, the codec may not be available. Or it is not compatible with Windows Media Player. Therefore, you may not be able to use Windows Media Player to play this particular .avi file now.
In some cases, some of the more important error messages contain a codec ID, which is known from the FourCC ID. You can use this FourCC ID to find the manufacturer who created the codec. Then check if the buyer can get the required codec from the manufacturer.

Note. If the identifier FourCC is not listed in the error message, unfortunately you will not be able to use Windows Player support and play this special .avi file.
Use FourCC to find the manufacturer of the codec. In step 3, the FourCC ID was “vcr2”. In this key example of facts, you will notice that “ATI Video Codec 2” is listed as the codec list and “ATI Technologies” is listed as the owner (or manufacturer).
