How is webmarshal used in streaming media applications?

WebMarshal can provide rule-based control of HTTP connection attempts from web browsers as well as many streaming media and instant messaging applications. If support for other protocols is required, WebMarshal can be used in conjunction with other proxy servers that run on any type of platform.

Is there a way to bypass webmarshal scanning?

You can add other trusted update sites to the WebMarshal proxy bypass list. For example, Flash can be allowed in conjunction with Java updates to avoid WebMarshal crawling. Devices or applications installed on WebMarshal will consume proxy resources even if they cannot display credentials or authenticate.

Symptoms:

Some clients may not be able to run Windows Update through the WebMarshal proxy.
Windows Update does not start automatically due to WebMarshal proxy.

Reasons:

The WebMarshal process may not allow access to all resellers required for the Windows Store or Windows Update.
Windows automatic processes do not try to use proxies by default, but cannot use account authentication.
Windows automated processes use a community proxy server that can be manually configured.

Websites Required For Windows Updates

You can enable the discovery of all required websites for Microsoft Windows updates by configuring specific policies in the WebMarshal configuration.

Create a new category of trusted URLs called “Software Updates” and then populate it with the following listUrls:
- http: //download.windowsupdate.
- http: //*.download.windowsupdate.com
- http://download.microsoft.com
- https: //*.update.microsoft.
- http: //*.update.microsoft.com
- https://update.microsoft.com
- http://update.microsoft.
- http: //*.windowsupdate.
- http: //*.windowsupdate.microsoft.com
- http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com
- https: //*.windowsupdate.microsoft.com
- http://ntservicepack.microsoft.com
- http://wustat.windows.com
Note. The list of websites that will host Windows updates may be reversed. The above list was sourced from Microsoft Knowledge Base 885819. If you are still having problems after following the steps for a specific article, use the Active Sessions to WebMarshal Console feature to identify blocked search directories and add them to the list.
Create a new standard rule like the one below. Place them above all obstruction rules:

Site Rule: Allow Software Updates
When the web application is received
For a specific user
What to do if someone’s URL is a member of an updateSoftware developments

Allow access to this site
And don’t apply any additional rules to block websites
Create a new crawl rule similar to the one below. Place it above all file type blocking rules:

File type rule: Allow software update files
When a real web request comes in
For each user
And where the URL is one of the other’s “software updates”

Allow access to this file
And no other file type rule will work
Don’t forget to reload the layout after making these changes.

Proxy Authorization Parameters

Windows Update cannot use a proxy that uses account authentication; There is # a way to store credentials.

There are several ways to enable automatic proxy updates.

Use WSUS. You can of course configure which WSUS server to use for credentialsproxies. This is the recommended option, designed for business scenarios and offering maximum flexibility. For more information on WSUS, see the “Configuration” section in the WSUS documentation. Check Microsoft Technet for the latest version. Here’s an updated version.
- Note. If WSUS needs to connect through WebMarshal, configure WSUS to run files in foreground mode, or add proxy directories to the crawl list. WSUS uses byte ranges from a background perspective, and mode types are not supported by the WebMarshal engine. See Trustwave Knowledge Base article Q11582 for more information.
Use IP Authentication in WebMarshal. How to use this option:
- Add any category of Software Updates URLs as described above.
- Enable IP Authentication in WebMarshal. (If you need account authentication to keep users entertained, force the browser proxy using GPO or other tools.)
- In each workspace, configure the default proxy settings for WinHTTP asto is described below using the IP WebMarshal check port.
Use the WebMarshal proxy bypass list. How to use this option:
- Add the above URLs if you need them to the WebMarshal proxy bypass list.
- On a practical workstation, configure the proxy server defined for WinHTTP as described below.

Proxy Methods For WinHTTP

Proxies use proxycfg or netsh winhttp (depending on Windows version) to configure default settings. See also Microsoft KB 900935.

In the following instructions, the proxy server name and port number refer to the name (or address) of the WebMarshal server and the plugins you want to retrieve, for example WMSERVER01: 8080
For current Windows versions (Windows 7 and above, Windows Server 2008 and above):
In advanced prompt (run as administrator) enter

netsh winhttp set proxy proxyservername: port number

Otherwise, if the current user’s Internet Explorer settings are correct, use them as you type:

Netsh winhttp import proxy source = ie
For Windows 2003 and earlier, at the command prompt, enter

Proxy name generated by proxycfg: port number

Notes:

Some previous versions of Windows Update allowed an interactive user to send messages through a proxy using their credentials. However, current versions of Windows Update through Microsoft Update use a basic process to get updates, including user-initiated updates. This article was revised some time ago to reflect this change.
