Apparently Windows (I’m Win 8.1) is somehow aware and / or configured in response to successfully setting BIOS to SATA mode. Dell also created a couple of partitions on the Windows factory hard drive. Partition C is a “” reserved system partition. As stated in this LifeHacker guide, you don’t have to clone your existing hard drive. In the end, I only cloned the C partition and missed the reserved partition. This means that if someone needs to permanently shut down and replace Disk 0 with your new SSD and restart it after a reboot, you will need to run Windows Automatic Repair to restore the bootloader. It does not occur to me if the CD is needed here or when it leaked onto the machine’s hard drive. I think my CD could be used.

After a recent review, I’m happy to report that my SSD is now successfully performing as a good Windows boot drive. Windows starts and finishes much faster, and programs fill up faster. It’s not as lightning fast as I hoped, but definitely faster. I think a great 2.2GHz duo processor and 4GB of RAM will be a bottleneck at times, but more than that it’s a big improvement and I’m glad I updated it.

Some DELL PCs are not available through IOATAFamily.Kext (patched by AppleIntelPIIXATA.kext), or the installer did not show the bootable storage on the installation screen when installing the SATA method for RAID. Confirmed that VOSTRO 400 INSPIRON and 545 are like that.
