You can run regedit without administrator rights by running it as a user without administrator rights. EUif you run it as a human, administrator, you will get a UAC prompt. However, if you run it as a basic user, you will not receive an invitation, and many things outside of HKEY_CURRENT_USER are read-only.

regedit.exe is undoubtedly tagged with , this may not always prompt an admin read only if the current user is often an admin.

If you really need to re-edit a non-admin admin user, according to this thread, you can use the Compatibility Admin tool to configure your own system to ignore the requested ExecutionLevel .

The updated regedit.exe (ie Vista + with UAC enabled) seems to have the annoying idea that it should be run “as administrator”. I’m not sure if this is technically correct, that it is “admin”, butthis complication is due to UAC and was an unfortunate increase.

This is a silly artificial limitation that allows the user to have read-only access to the vast majority of registry locations and write to HKCU. Aside from disabling UAC, which requires admin rights but is neither possible nor recommended, I am not working on how to get around this limitation for regedit.exe. Follows

    1. you can register. use (exe is distributed with Windows) even if there is no cool user interface.
    2. Use a third party registry editor / tool if that silly UAC increase / limitation doesn’t apply.
    3. You can use regedit.exe from Windows XP, which turns out to be “Doesn’t know UAC” – YMMV.
    4. As with Sircapsalot, use the managed API – ideal if you’re already using C #.
