PC running slow?
If you receive the “Remote Desktop Connection for Windows XP Service Pack 3” error message on your computer, read these troubleshooting guidelines.
If you’ve never used Remote Desktop, this is a great way to remotely connect to a machine with an additional PC (office, home, etc.). I regularly use a remote monitor to connect to servers in our office, connect to users’ computers for technical softwareSupport and connect to my finances on my home computer to access files.
To use Remote Desktop, you need to understand a few things. First of all, Remote Desktop only works on Windows XP and Windows 2003. I mean you can only connect to one Windows XP and that could be Machine 2003. You can just connect to a Windows XP or 2003 computer with Windows 98, ME or 2000, unfortunately you cannot remotely connect to a 98, ME or 2000 computer. If you plan to connect a computer running Windows 2000 or earlier, you will need to purchase commercial software.
Since this letter is over 7 years old, the copy is out of date. You can also hyperlink to a computer running Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8. Can you use Remote Desktop with Windows XP?
With Remote Desktop in Windows XP, you can remotely control your computer from another office, non-commercial location, or while traveling. This allows you to use the data, applications, and network devices that are on your desktop PC when you are away from the office.

The second thing you need to do is open a port on your router (unless you connect your cable modem directly to your computer) and open that port on the computer you want to connect to. For remote computers, you always choose TCP as the protocol. By default, Remote Desktop uses port 3389, so enter that in the Central Export and Port fields.
