Over the past week, some of our readers have reported that they have encountered the Windows 7 Registry Key Finder.
Click Start or press the Windows key.From the Start menu, type regedit in the Run box or in the search box and press Enter.If you are prompted to manage the user account, click Yes to get the Registry Editor.The Windows Registry Editor screen should open, which will no doubt look like the example below.

Overview
The registry for 64-bit versions of Windows is divided into 32-bit and 64-bit keys. Many 32-bit keys have the same name as their previous 64-bit counterparts, and vice versa.
The default 64-bit version of the registry (Regedit editor.exe) included with 64-bit versions of Windows uses both 64-bit and 32-bit keys. The WOW64 registry redirector represents 32-bit programs by using different 32-bit keys for program registry entries. In the 64-bit version of the Registry Editorand 32-bit keys appear in the actual registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareWOW6432Node.
Show 64-bit And 32-bit Keys
You can view or edit 64-bit and 32-bit registry keys and values using the 64-bit default Registry Editor. To view or edit 64-bit keys, you must use the 64-bit version of the registry (regedit.exe editor). You can also view or edit 32-bit keys and values using the 32-bit Registry Editor in the %systemroot%Syswow64 folder. There is no inaccuracy in how you perform tasks by bundling the 32-bit version of the Registry Editor in addition to the 64-bit version of the Registry Editor. To open the 32-bit version of the Registry Editor, do the following:

You must close the current 64-bit version of the Registry Editor before opening the 32-bit version (and vice versa) unless you rune second instance of the Registry Editor using the
-mswitch. For example, if the 64-bit version of Registry Editor is already running, enter%systemroot%syswow64regedit -mabove step 2 to launch the specific 32-bit version of Registry Editor.
To support the coexistence of 32-bit and 64-bit COM registers and/or program state, WOW64 introduces 32-bit programs using an alternate register representation. 32-bit computer programs will see the 32-bit bonsai HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftware (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareWOW6432Node) completely surrounded by the powerful 64-bit HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE separately from the tree structure Software. Click the Windows Start button and select Run. Type “regedit” in the text box that appears and click the “OK” button. Opens the following Windows Registry Editor.

What is the Windows Registry and how does it work?
