In some cases, the shoe settings generated by bcdboot become invalid after switching drives. If the system does not boot, the repair CD will be used. You can also go to the command prompt and run the bcdboot command again, or you can simply enable automatic recovery after fixing the problem.

I do not executel my plan because I wasn’t sure what opportunities were opening up. I took the opportunity to install modern Windows 8 on a clean “host” computer and then just reinstall / copy everything from the old hard drive. This was not the answer I was hoping for, but a lot of reliable things that I could see for myself.
