The Anglo-Zulu War was fought in 1879 in the British Empire and some Zulu kingdoms. Under the 1867 Constitution Act for the Federation in Canada, passed by Lord Carnarvon, it was believed that similar government efforts could be successful in military campaigns with African kingdoms, tribal territories and therefore the Boer republics in South Africa. In 1874 Sir Frere Bartle was sent to South Africa as High Commissioner of the British Empire to carry out such plans. Obstacles included the presence of the independent states of the Republic of South Africa and the Zulu Kingdom and its army.
