ARC is a lossless data compression and archiving format developed by System Enhancement Associates (SEA). The file format with the program was called ARC. The format became known in the 1980s as a thematic issue that became part of an important debate over later open formats.
ARC was extremely popular in the early days of dial-up BBSes. ARC was useful because it combined the capabilities of the SQ program for blocking files and the LU program for creating multiple files in .LBR archives.
